TikTok is great for a variety of things, including recipes, fashion ideas, cat videos, and comedic relief. But following every tip from TikTok users could mean risking your health when it comes to wellness trends.


Every year, at least a few new wellness rituals are introduced that content producers claim to be hacked, and they catch on like wildfire. The use of dry protein powder to enhance its effects, putting garlic up one's nose to clear sinuses, and contouring sunscreen to make one's face look more sculpted were all popular last year. However, experts said these methods don't always work and may be harmful.

It all comes down to a few factors as to why such practices can spread like wildfire without any proof.

"Human nature is to seek out the path of least resistance," said Dr. Niket Sonpal an adjunct assistant professor of clinical medicine in the department of basic biomedical sciences at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York City. "There's really suffering and pain, and individuals want relief."

He added that some people might find it difficult to see a doctor because of health literacy issues, healthcare disparities, or time restraints, which can result in crowdsourcing from questionable sources.

"It's challenging because, on the one hand, there are harmful practices. On the other hand, some of them actually provide benefits for people's health, according to CNN Medical Analyst Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and visiting professor of health policy and management at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University.
